ROUND DIAMOND
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Though the terms may seem interchangeable, they are far from it. The cut of a diamond refers specifically to its sparkle effect, or light reflection, the color shown within the diamond, and its symmetry. A diamond’s shape refers to the design in which the gem was cut into.
This may be an obvious statement, but the round shape is the most typical shape used for jewelry pieces. Round shaped diamonds are usually priced the highest due to their brilliant cut and popularity.
Marcel Tolkowsky was actually a Russian mathematician who discovered the exact amount of cuts needed in order to shape the perfect round diamonds seen in those beautiful engagement rings we have today. Round shaped diamonds were being cut since the 17th century, however, this modern design was not created until around 1920.
Imagine a room full of mirrors and lights. Facets are the smooth surfaces all over the diamond, reflecting light, creating sparkle, and showing off the geometrical pattern of the diamond shape. The round diamond has 58 facets. There are 33 on the top, the crown, and 25 facets found on the bottom half, known as the pavilion.
The round shape is self-explanatory for the most part. This particular shape has a circular top with a cone shaped bottom.
