Though the terms may seem interchangeable, they are far from it. The cut of a diamond refers specifically to its sparkle effect, or light reflection, the color shown within the diamond, and its symmetry. A diamond’s shape refers to the design in which the gem was cut into.

Oval shaped diamonds are somewhere in the middle of the price range when it comes to diamond shopping, not the most expensive, but there are more affordable options as well.

Being one of the oldest diamond shapes, the oval shape dates back to the 14th century. The modern oval shape we see today was created by a diamond cutter originally from Russia, Lazare Kaplan in 1957.

Imagine a room full of mirrors and lights. Facets are the smooth surfaces all over the diamond, reflecting light, creating sparkle, and showing off the geometrical pattern of the diamond shape. The oval shape includes 58 facets, giving it a very close similarity to the sparkle seen in a round shape.

The look of the diamond is plainly found in the name, however, something to note is that because of its shape and including its facet brilliance, it gives the illusion of being much larger than a round diamond of similar carat weight.
