Getting engaged in Maui: where, when and how to find the ring

You can propose on any Maui beach without a permit; aim to arrive 30 minutes before sunset, about 5:15pm in December and 6:40pm in July. The south shore around Wailea is one of the driest parts of the island, which makes it a good bet for clear weather.

Maui gives you a lot of good places to ask, and most of them are free and open to the public. This guide covers where to go, when the light is best, what needs a permit and what to do about the ring.

Where to propose on Maui

Every beach in Hawaiʻi is public up to the highest reach of the waves, usually the line of vegetation or debris. These are the spots we would send a friend to, starting closest to our store.

Wailea Beach Path

A paved walk of about a mile and a half along the shore, past Wailea's beaches and resorts. It is quiet early in the morning and lovely at sunset, and you can step down onto the sand at several public access points. The Shops at Wailea is a short walk inland.

Wailea, Polo and Keawakapu beaches

Soft sand, calm mornings and a clear view west to the islands of Kahoʻolawe and Molokini.

Mākena (Big Beach)

A long, wide beach in Mākena State Park, a few minutes south of Wailea. Visitors pay a small entry and parking fee; no booking is needed. On some days the park closes before sunset; check the hours on the park page.

Haleakalā at sunrise

A sunrise proposal on Haleakalā takes planning. Every car entering the national park between 3am and 7am needs a sunrise reservation booked on Recreation.gov, released 60 days ahead with a second batch two days before. The summit is often below freezing before dawn, so bring warm layers for both of you. Haleakalā is a sacred place for Native Hawaiians; keep the moment quiet and respectful.

ʻĪao Valley and the Road to Hāna

For green cliffs and waterfalls, ʻĪao Valley State Monument and Waiʻānapanapa State Park (the black sand beach on the Road to Hāna) both need a reservation for visitors from out of state, booked through Hawaiʻi State Parks. Along the Hāna Highway, park only where it is allowed; many pullouts are signed no parking and some land is private.

Lahaina is still rebuilding after the 2023 wildfire and remains a place of loss for the people who live there, so we would choose another spot. If you visit, check the County of Maui's recovery updates first.

When to propose

  • Season. Hawaiʻi's wetter season runs roughly October to April and the drier season May to September. The south shore around Wailea and Kīhei gets little rain in any month.
  • Whale season. Humpback whales are off Maui from about November to May, most of all from January to March.
  • Sunset. Hawaiʻi never changes its clocks. Sunset is earliest, about 5:45pm, in late November and early December, and latest, about 7:10pm, in late June and early July. Arrive 30 minutes early for the best light.
  • Crowds. The busiest stretches are the winter holidays, March and midsummer. Early mornings are quiet all year.

Bringing a photographer

A private proposal needs no permit. If you hire a photographer, ask whether they hold the right permit for the spot you choose: Hawaiʻi requires permits for commercial photography on state beaches and in state parks, and the rules differ from place to place.

Getting the ring size right

You do not need the exact size to propose. Plenty of people propose with a ring that is resized afterwards. If you can, borrow a ring they already wear on that finger, or ask a sibling or close friend. On the island, heat, humidity, a long flight and salty food all make fingers swell, so a size taken here can read larger than at home. Our ring sizing page covers the details.

What we would do: propose on the Wailea Beach Path at sunset, arrive half an hour early, and if the size is a guess, propose anyway and resize later.

Choosing the ring

Many couples bring the ring from home, and many choose it together during the trip. If you are choosing one here, start with our engagement rings in Wailea, Maui, or read about custom jewelry in Maui and resetting a stone you already own.

A Hawaiian touch

Some couples mark the moment with a lei. Maile, a native vine twisted into an open lei, is the traditional lei of Hawaiian weddings. Others add a piece with an island motif, such as a sea turtle or a wave. Our guide to what Hawaiian jewelry designs mean explains each one.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to propose on a Maui beach?

No. Hawaiʻi's beaches are public, and a private proposal needs no permit. If you hire a photographer, ask whether they hold the right permit for the spot, because commercial photography on state beaches and in state parks needs one.

What is the best time of year to propose on Maui?

Any time. The drier season runs roughly May to September, humpback whales are offshore from about November to May, and the south shore around Wailea gets little rain in any month.

What time is sunset on Maui?

Between about 5:45pm in late November and early December and about 7:10pm in late June and early July. Hawaiʻi does not change its clocks.

Do I need a reservation for a Haleakalā sunrise proposal?

Yes. Every car entering Haleakalā National Park between 3am and 7am needs a sunrise reservation from Recreation.gov, released 60 days ahead with a second batch two days before.

What if I don't know the ring size?

Propose anyway. Plenty of people propose with a ring that is resized afterwards. Borrowing a ring they already wear on that finger gets you close.
