Ring resizing before your flight home
Most rings can be resized, but a ring that feels tight in Maui heat may fit at home, so check the size more than once before you change it for good. Tell us your flight date when you buy, and we will tell you what is possible.

A ring that fit in the store can feel tight after a hot afternoon, or loose after a swim. Before you change a ring for good, it helps to know whether the size is really wrong, what resizing involves, and what your options are with a flight to catch.
Now or later?
Ask us while you are here if
- The ring is clearly too big or too small, at a normal temperature, on more than one day.
- It will be worn every day from now on.
- You can tell us your flight date the day you buy.
Wait until you are home if
- Your hands are swollen from heat, salt or the flight.
- The ring is a surprise and its wearer has not tried it on.
- It fits well enough to wear safely with a temporary sizer.
Tell us your flight date when you buy, and we will tell you what is possible.
How a ring is resized
- Going up a sizeThe band is cut at the bottom, a small piece of matching metal is added, and the joint is soldered, reshaped and polished.
- Going down a sizeA small section of the band is removed and the ends are joined again.
- PlatinumA harder metal that melts at a higher temperature, so it is often joined with a laser welder.
- FinishingWhite gold is re-plated so the color matches all the way round, and the stones near the band are checked.
Most rings move a quarter or half size without trouble. Changes of more than about two sizes put more strain on the ring, especially one with a heavy setting.
Rings that are hard to resize
- Eternity bands
- Stones all the way round leave no plain metal to cut. A half eternity band may allow a small change.
- Tension settings
- The band itself holds the stone, so changing the band can loosen it.
- Tungsten and titanium
- Too hard to cut or stretch in the usual way.
- Channel-set or patterned bands
- It depends on the design. Ask before you buy and we will look at that ring.

A solitaire on a plain band is the easiest kind of ring to resize. A full eternity band is the hardest.

A temporary fix
If a ring is only a little loose, it can be worn safely while you decide. Sizing beads are two small metal balls added inside the band. A sizing bar is a small curved piece across the inside. A ring guard is a soft wrap that slips on and off. Each one keeps the ring from spinning or sliding off, and none of them changes the ring for good.
Getting the size right first
Heat, humidity, a long flight and salty food make fingers swell; cold water makes them smaller. Measure at a normal room temperature, more than once, ideally on different days. A wide band fits more snugly than a thin one at the same size. Our ring sizing page has more.
What we would do: if the ring is close, wear it home with a sizing guard and decide once your hands are back to normal. If it is clearly wrong, tell us your flight date the day you buy.
Resizing once you are home
Keep the ring in your carry-on bag on the flight: the TSA asks travelers not to put valuable jewelry in checked luggage. If you send a ring back to us, use a tracked, insured service. Jewelers Mutual, a jewelry insurer, points to USPS Registered Mail and Priority Mail Express, packed in two boxes with nothing on the label that says jewelry. Our resizing page explains how to start.

Common questions
Can any ring be resized?
Most can. Full eternity bands, tension settings and tungsten or titanium rings are hard or impossible to resize, and channel-set or patterned bands depend on the design.
How much can a ring be resized?
A quarter or half size is routine. Changes of more than about two sizes put more strain on the ring, especially one with a heavy setting.
Should I resize my ring on vacation?
Only if it is clearly the wrong size at a normal temperature. Heat, humidity, salt and flying make fingers swell, so a ring that feels tight on Maui may fit at home.
What can I do if my ring is a little loose?
Sizing beads, a sizing bar or a ring guard can keep it from slipping without changing the ring for good.
How do I send a ring for resizing?
Use a tracked, insured service. Jewelers Mutual points to USPS Registered Mail and Priority Mail Express, packed in two boxes with nothing on the label that says jewelry.
