The Shops at Wailea sit across the road from the Wailea shoreline, so a morning on the beach, an afternoon walk and dinner can all happen within a short distance of each other. This is what is nearby, checked against official sources where they exist.

The Wailea beaches

Four public beach parks line the Wailea shore. From north to south they are Mokapu, Ulua, Wailea Beach and Polo Beach, and the Wailea Beach Path joins them all.

Mokapu and Ulua
Two beaches side by side at the north end. People snorkel off the rocky point at Ulua when the water is calm.

Polo Beach
At the south end of the path.

Conditions change through the day, shore break can be strong, and lifeguards are not always on duty. Check the day's conditions on Hawaiʻi Beach Safety before you swim, and keep rings and pearls off in the water.

The Wailea Beach Path

The path runs about a mile and a half along the shore between Polo Beach and Mokapu Beach, past the Wailea resorts. It is the easiest way to see the whole coast.

Whales and sunsets

In winter, watch the water from the path for humpback whales. NOAA's humpback whale sanctuary says they arrive in the fall, are most common from January to March, and are gone by early May. The water off Wailea is part of that sanctuary.

Wailea faces west across the channel toward Kahoʻolawe and the small crescent of Molokini, so the sun goes down over the water. Any of the beaches is a good place to watch it.

Mākena State Park

A short drive south of Wailea, Mākena State Park holds Oneloa, often called Big Beach. The state lists its hours as 5am to 7pm daily, and until 7:45pm in May, June and July. Hawaiʻi residents enter free with ID; visitors pay $5 per person and $10 to park, and children 3 and under are free. The park warns that its shore break can be very dangerous.
